I'm going to be over in Highland, across the river, today for a puppy adoption event being held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The homeless dogs will be given away from Dirty Dogs Pet Service at 3592 Route 9W.
The dogs were rescued by Pancake Hollow Farms and Rescue, a Highland-based group that travels around the country rescuing dogs that otherwise might be put to sleep.
The rescue organization is also accepting donations of bleach, paper towels, bath towels and garbage bags.

The three dogs in the picture above were from a racetrack in Guam.
On November 7, 2008 the 32 year old Guam Greyhound Park, with approximately 250 greyhounds at the racetrack, abruptly closed. A couple of weeks later the Guam Greyhound Park started a public giveaway of 150 of the racetrack's greyhounds. Dogs were given away free to anyone who came to the track. None of the greyhounds were spayed or neutered. No record was kept of who got the greyhounds or how many each person took. Obviously, no standard adoption process was in place: no home check and no information about greyhound behavior or care.
Many of the dogs were simply turned loose in the jungle to fend for themselves. The whole story is on the group's Web site.
The Cross River, Westchester County, organization places greyhounds in homes in Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange and Ulster counties in New York and Fairfield and Litchfield counties in Connecticut.

While we wait patiently for the president to return from Europe, so the really important things can happen — like getting a dog for your kids — USA Today has a story about two books written about the First Dog.
They are:
Which Puppy? (Simon & Schuster, $16.99, ages 4-8) will be released April 7; First Dog (Sleeping Bear, $15.95, ages 4-8) arrives April 15.
Which Puppy? is written by Kate Feiffer.
Feiffer, 45, quickly wrote a story and enlisted her father, Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Jules Feiffer, 80, to do the illustrations. He spent three weeks "drawing dogs day and night."
I love Jules Feiffer's cartoons, especially those in the New Yorker, when he would draw someone doing an interpretive dance.
The other book is by another set of close relations.
Meanwhile, another father-daughter team, J. Patrick Lewis, 66, and Beth Zappitello, 44, had just handed in a manuscript about an "All-American mutt" in a global quest for a perfect home. The day after the election, their editor asked if they could revise the book. The result is First Dog, illustrated by Tim Bowers.
I got an e-mail recently from the Joan Vercruse, the vice president of the Animal Rescue Foundation in Beacon.
Maybe someone will read it and be moved to action.
Here it is:
My name is Joan Vercruse. I have been a volunteer with the Animal Rescue Foundation for over 10 years. ARF is a "No-kill" shelter for dogs and cats in Beacon, NY. I am writting to you in regards to a story I hope you may help us get into the news to help a really sweet dog.
On this past Friday the 13th of February a good person found a dog on the side of the road that appeared to have been hit by a car, because when she stopped the dog could hardly stand. The woman used her cell phone to call 411 and used her gps to get the dog to our shelter within 10 minutes of finding the pup.
I wrapped the pup in a blanket and our President Barbara Shea got him to the vet ASAP. Well after a full exam and tons of x-rays and blood work the conclusion is that "Joey" has deformities in all four of his legs from birth. Which leads me the saddest part of this.
There is no way he could have walked to the side of the road. He was most likely left there by someone who has probably become desperate during these very hard economic times and felt they had no choice.
But here is the upside: As long as he lives he will have a home at ARF but a better end to the story would be if with a little press and a good pic someone might just find it in their hearts to open their home to this "special pup."
Joey is 8-10 years old and completely house broken (just carry all 15 lbs of him out to a clear spot and he does all his business). He has a great appetite and loves to cuddle. If you could help with getting a story about Joey in the Journal I would be forever grateful.
